Night Safety Score

City-level safety ratings are useless — they average safe suburbs with risky alleys. Pick the neighbourhood and hour, get a real answer.

What this tool does

Spain's overall safety record is good by European standards but the headline numbers mask two realities: (1) petty crime (pickpocketing, bag-snatching, mobile-phone grabs) is high in tourist zones, and (2) specific neighbourhoods can shift between safe and risky depending on the hour.

This calculator combines: (1) area type, (2) time of night, (3) group size, (4) city-level base rate. The output is a 0–100 safety score with specific risk types to watch for.

Frequently asked questions

Are violent crimes against tourists common?

No. Spain has very low violent crime rates by international standards. The two exceptions: late-night bar-fights in tourist nightlife zones (mostly male-on-male alcohol-driven), and the rare "mugging" by motorbike for mobile phone in Barcelona (pickpocketing escalated). Mugging for cash is rare.

Is walking alone at night in Spain safe?

In most cities and neighbourhoods, yes. In tourist zones (Las Ramblas, Sol) be alert for pickpockets. In certain neighbourhoods (Barrio de las Flores in Barcelona, parts of Lavapiés in Madrid late at night), use normal big-city caution. Avoid empty beaches and parks between 01:00 and 06:00.

What's "tirones" (snatch theft)?

A common scam in Barcelona: a thief on a motorbike or bicycle grabs your bag, phone, or necklace from behind. Carry bags cross-body, hold phones tighter in tourist zones, leave jewellery in hotel safe.

Should women take extra precautions?

In tourist areas and big-city nightlife, same precautions as anywhere: don't walk alone in unfamiliar areas after 02:00, don't accept drinks from strangers, use licensed taxis. Spain is generally safer than most European countries for solo female travellers but not safer than, say, Japan.

Limitations

Safety ratings are composite approximations from Ministry of Interior crime data and expat/locals reporting. Single incidents can happen anywhere. The score cannot predict individual crimes. Always trust your instincts over a calculator.
