Hotel Breakfast vs Local Café

Score your hotel's breakfast offer against what you'd actually eat at a Spanish café nearby. Find out if the €15 buffet is worth it or a tourist trap.

What this tool does

Hotel breakfast is the most overpriced item in Spanish tourism. A buffet libre that costs €14–22 per person to the guest costs the hotel €4–7 to provide. Spanish locals eat breakfast at a bar: café con leche + tostada con tomate + zumo = €3.50–5, much better than any buffet.

This calculator compares the hotel offer against the local alternative, factoring in walking distance, appetite, and the days you'll eat at hotel. It outputs a verdict and per-trip savings.

When hotel breakfast is worth it

  • It's included in the room rate (do the math: if rate-with-breakfast is within €5/night of rate-only, take breakfast).
  • You have kids and need an easy 15-minute fuel stop before sightseeing.
  • You're in a remote area with no local café within 10 minutes.
  • You're a big breakfast eater (eggs, ham, fresh juice, pastry) — in which case the buffet beats a €9–12 café breakfast.

When it's not worth it

  • You're an early-bird eater who wants to be out the door by 8:30 — the buffet will still be set up, the café won't open until 9:00.
  • You're fine with café con leche + tostada — €3 vs €15 is a clear win.
  • The hotel is in a city centre with cafés at the door.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just order half portions at the café?

Yes — media ración of tostada con tomate is €1.50–2, café solo €1.20. Many Spanish cafés have a "desayuno" combo (toast + coffee + juice) for €3.50–4.50.

What about Mercadona / supermarket breakfast?

A €0.60 pastry from Mercadona + café from the hotel's breakfast bar = €1.50 total. But you'd lose the cultural breakfast experience. Most travellers prefer the café.

Is hotel breakfast free in Spain sometimes?

Only in 4★+ chains and most boutique hotels. Airbnb and apartments rarely include it. Hostels rarely have breakfast (€1–3 extra).

Limitations

Buffet quality varies hugely. A 5★ hotel's buffet libre can actually be worth €18+ (fresh tortilla station, jamón cortador, freshly squeezed juice). A 3★ buffet is usually over €12 for what you'd get at a café for €5. The calculator cannot see the actual buffet quality — your judgement on the first morning helps.
