What this tool does
Spain sells 6 million flamenco tickets a year. About 95% are the tourist version: choreographed shows with rehearsed dancers, flamenco-costume claps, drink in hand, 45 minutes and out. The remaining 5% are real tablaos and peñas where serious artists perform for fellow fans.
This tool gives an authenticity score from 0–100. The score combines venue, price, duration, style and booking channel.
How to spot the tourist trap
- The "flamenco + dinner" combo: Tourist conveyor. You're paying for the food; flamenco is a side dish at best.
- Bookable 1 month+ ahead on big OTAs: Tourist product. Authentic tablaos have a 2-day window.
- Picturesque location with view: Often a tourist trap. Real flamenco happens in windowless basements.
- Multiple shows per night: Each show has the same artists performing a 30-minute set. Mass production.
- Costume changes every song: Tourist indicator. Authentic flamenco wears the same outfit all night.
Frequently asked questions
Is flamenco really performed live?
In tablaos and peñas, yes — every time. The guitarist, singer (cante), and dancer (baile) interact in real time. This is part of what makes flamenco feel alive.
Where is flamenco born?
Andalusía — specifically Jerez, Sevilla, Cádiz, Triana (across the river from central Sevilla). Andalusian gitano (Roma) communities developed flamenco over centuries from Indian, Moorish, Jewish and Spanish folk roots.
Is it rude to take photos?
In tourist shows: usually allowed. In peñas: ask first. In Sacromonte caves: usually forbidden during the dance (you can take before/after). Phone use during performance is poor form.
Best time of year for flamenco?
February–March (Semana Santa run-up, Bienal de Flamenco in Sevilla). Summer festival season. September (Flamenco Biennial in Madrid is biennial). Off-season: still find tablaos year-round.
Limitations
Authenticity is subjective. Some "tourist" tablaos employ real artists who treat each show professionally. Some "authentic" peñas have local bands of variable quality. The score is a heuristic, not a verdict. If you love flamenco after a tourist show — great. If you want to know what's real, find a peña.
